Sky Sports drops Frenkie de Jong update

sky sports have claimed Manchester United may forgo a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Lowdown: Does De Jong now want to move?

The Red Devils want to make the 25-year-old their first major summer signing but had an opening bid of €60m (£51.2m) plus €10m (£8.5m) add-ons rejected.

Erik ten Hag a would have persuaded De Jong to move to Old Trafford, so it looks like United just have to agree on a fee. This however seems to be the main stumbling block when it comes to a transfer, and sky sports have now provided an over-the-air update.

The latest: Sky Sports update

sky sports relayed on-air news about United and De Jong on Saturday afternoon.

They explained: “We were told that Manchester United would walk away from a deal for Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona if they could not agree on what they considered a reasonable fee for the midfielder.”

They added that ‘talks are ongoing’, although the two clubs are still apart over a valuation.

The verdict: you have to be fast

De Jong has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford since Ten Hag was announced as manager at the end of April.

Seven weeks on, a transfer has still not been agreed, so United may have to set a deadline to pursue the Dutch midfielder before moving on to other targets.

Ten Hag is quite short midfield options after it was announced that Paul Pogba, jesse lingard and Juan Mata will all leave; and over time United chiefs need to get the ball rolling with a number of signings if they are to be sufficiently supplied for the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
