Markus Haggeney appointed new FAI General Secretary
The FAI Executive Committee has appointed Markus Haggeney as the new Secretary General of FAI, the World Air Sports Federation, with immediate effect. Mr Haggeney, who had been appointed acting FAI Secretary General in December of last year, has officially accepted the new post.
In his role as FAI Director of Sports and Events, which he assumed in 2014, he has successfully and continuously advanced air sports. He also endeavored to cultivate links with all the players in the Federation, while building new bridges with the world of sport and beyond.
Markus Haggeney said: âI am delighted to have the opportunity to take on this new challenge. Together with the FAI office, and working with the entire FAI community, the goal now is to make the FAI grow stronger as an organization. Stabilization and consolidation are the key words of the times to come.
FAI President Bob Henderson said: âI am very happy that Markus has accepted the post of Secretary General and I think this is a good decision for the future of the FAI.
A 60-year-old German, Markus Haggeney’s commitment to sport dates back to his childhood and led him to be involved in air sports all his life.
After competing internationally in several ballooning championships, he decided to step through the looking glass and became the event organizer, official and competition director of many competitions and events. Eager to play an even more active role in the sporting community and to participate in the development of the rules and organization of the sport, he represented Germany in hot air balloons for 15 years, before joining the FAI office in Lausanne in 2014.
A seasoned and official pilot, Markus has also developed numerous corporate activities in and outside the world of air sports, giving him insight into the business world which is vital for International Federations today. He is currently training to become a paraglider pilot.
