Hexcel collaborates with Spirit on new sustainable aerospace technology

Hexcel has partnered with Spirit AeroSystems Europe in a strategic collaboration within its Aerospace Innovation Center (AIC) to develop more sustainable aircraft manufacturing technologies for future aircraft production.

Spirit AeroSystems Europe inaugurated the new 90,000ft2 innovation center at its site in Prestwick, Scotland, in September 2021.

AIC has been established as a center of excellence for research and development of advanced materials, technologies and digital manufacturing processes, where Spirit Europe will collaborate with academic and industrial partners, including Hexcel, to innovate, train and develop skills for today and tomorrow.

Based in Wichita, Kansas, Spirit has production facilities in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Malaysia and Morocco.

Some of the collaborative activities at AIC between Hexcel and Spirit Europe include the continued development of resin transfer molding (RTM) production applications that will present future opportunities for liquid composite molding (LCM) solutions. Hexcel HiTape, a high performance dry unidirectional tape optimized for fully automated placement, and HiMax multiaxial fabrics enable RTM fabrication of primary aerostructure components using HiFlow infusion resins.
